Zomig Nasal Spray comes in 2.5 mg and 5 mg doses and is administered as a nasal spray. Use one spray into one nostril at the first sign of a migraine. Do not take multiple doses of the medication if there isn’t any improvement in your migraine symptoms. You can use another dose of the medication at least two hours after the first dose if the symptoms are only partially relieved or if the headache returns.
To use Zomig Nasal Spray, gently blow your nose and avoid spraying the medication into your eyes. Remove the protective cap and press firmly on one side of your nose to block one nostril. Insert the tip of the spray device into the other nostril and inhale gently while pressing the plunger. Tilt your head slightly backwards and breathe through your mouth for 5-10 seconds after using the spray. Some wetness or a slight taste after using the medication is normal.
The recommended initial dose of Zomig Nasal Spray (Zolmitriptan) is 2.5 milligrams (mg), which is one spray into one nostril. Another spray (either 2.5mg or 5mg) may be used for a migraine that persists or a new one that occurs within 24 hours of the first dose. The maximum recommended dose of Zomig Nasal Spray in a single day is 10mg, which is four sprays. Do not use the spray for more than 10 days in a row, as it may make your headaches worse (medication overuse headache).
If you are at a higher risk of heart problems, your doctor may perform a heart exam before you start taking Zomig Nasal Spray. Your doctor may also direct you to take your first dose of the medication in the office or clinic to monitor for serious side effects such as chest pain.
