Trintellix, generically known as Vortioxetine, is a prescription medication used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. It belongs to the class of drugs known as serotonin modulators. It works by affecting the balance of chemicals in the brain that are associated with mood and other mental health functions.

Trintellix is effective in relieving depressive symptoms and improving overall quality of life for those with MDD. Trintellix is typically prescribed when other antidepressants have not been successful, or when a patient does not experience relief from existing treatment. It is used to treat major depressive disorder and may help people who have difficulty with concentration, energy, motivation, and feelings of sadness or hopelessness.

Trintellix (vortioxetine) comes in the form of a tablet and is usually taken once a day, with or without food. You can take Trintellix at around the same time each day, as directed by your doctor. You should also inform your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, and herbal products), as these may interact with Trintellix and cause unwanted side effects.

The usual adult dose for major depressive disorder is 10 mg of Trintellix (vortioxetine) taken orally once a day. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed, up to a maximum of 20 mg/day. For patients who cannot tolerate higher doses, Trintellix (vortioxetine) can be taken at a lower dose of 5 mg orally once a day.

Vortioxetine can be discontinued abruptly, but a decrease to 10 mg a day is recommended for patients who are on 15 mg a day or more for one week before complete discontinuation.

  • TRINTELLIX and other antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in people 24 years of age and younger, especially during the first few months of treatment or when the dose is changed. Be aware of this risk and report any changes in mood or behavior to your healthcare provider.
  • Do not start or take TRINTELLIX if you are taking a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days. Do not start taking an MAOI for at least 21 days after you stop treatment with TRINTELLIX. MAOIs are a type of antidepressant medication and taking them in combination with TRINTELLIX can increase the risk of serious side effects.
  • Do not start or take TRINTELLIX if you are allergic to vortioxetine or any of the ingredients in TRINTELLIX. Before taking any medication, consult a doctor or pharmacist to make sure it is safe for you.
  • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor before taking TRINTELLIX, as it may harm your unborn baby. Taking TRINTELLIX during your third trimester may cause your baby to have withdrawal symptoms after birth or to be at increased risk for a serious lung problem at birth.

Is Trintellix an anxiety medication?

Although Trintellix is not approved for anxiety, it has been used off-label to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It appears to work best in those with severe GAD (HAMA of >25).

How long can you take vortioxetine?

Do not stop taking vortioxetine unless your doctor tells you to do so. You should expect that the course of treatment will last for several months. This is normal and helps to prevent your symptoms from recurring. You should continue to take vortioxetine for at least six months after you feel well again.

How long does it take for vortioxetine to start working?

Some people start to feel some benefits of Trintellix (vortioxetine) within 2 weeks, but it could take 4 weeks or longer to get the full effect. If it is not working by 6 to 8 weeks, talk to your healthcare provider about whether a dose increase (or different medication) could be right for you.
