Synvisc (generically known as Hylan GF 20) is a medication used to treat knee pain in patients with joint inflammation caused by osteoarthritis. It is a viscosupplement injection made from a natural substance that lubricates and cushions the joint and can provide up to six months of relief from knee pain.
Synvisc is indicated for use in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conservative non-pharmacologic therapy and simple analgesics, e.g., acetaminophen. It is usually given after other arthritis medications have been tried without success. Synvisc-One is a specific formulation of Synvisc that is designed to be injected in a single dose instead of multiple injections.
Synvisc (Hylan GF 20) is administered by injection directly into the affected joint usually once a week, without using skin disinfectants containing ammonium salts to prepare the injection site. If excess fluid is present in the joint, a doctor may remove it before administering the injection.
Dosage is dependent on the individual medical condition and response to treatment. To avoid increased side effects, the injection should not be given into a vein or artery. Patients should also avoid any strenuous activities that put pressure on the knee joint for at least 48 hours after receiving the injection, such as jogging, tennis, heavy lifting or standing for more than an hour.
After the injection, initial pain and swelling in the knee joint is normal, and if it continues or worsens, patients should consult their doctor immediately. Follow the injection schedule as it may take up to three injections before the full benefits of Synvisc occur.
Synvisc (Hylan GF 20) is available in the following forms and strengths:
Synvisc injections are usually given as a series of three injections, given one week apart. Additional injections may be given as needed, but typically no more than two series of injections are recommended.
No, Synvisc is not a steroid. It is a viscosupplement injection made from a natural substance that lubricates and cushions the joint.
Patients may start to feel relief from knee pain within a few days of the first injection, but it typically takes several weeks for the full effects of Synvisc to be felt.
Patients should avoid any strenuous activity, such as running or jumping, for at least 48 hours after receiving a Synvisc injection. After that, patients can slowly return to their regular activities.
Synvisc is only approved for use in the knee joint, and it should not be used in other joints.
Synvisc may not be as effective in patients with severe osteoarthritis, and it may be less likely to provide long-lasting relief in these patients.
