Reglan is a prescription medication used to treat gastrointestinal issues such as heartburn, nausea, and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. It contains an active ingredient called metoclopramide. Metoclopramide belongs to a class of drugs called Antiemetic Agents; Prokinetic Agents. It works by increasing muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract, which speeds up the rate at which the stomach empties into the intestines.
Reglan is only intended for short-term use (4 to 12 weeks) and should not be used for longer periods of time without consulting a healthcare provider. It can be indicated to treat a variety of conditions related to the digestive system, and slow stomach emptying (gastroparesis) in patients with diabetes. Metoclopramide can be used to treat conditions caused by diabetes, surgery, radiation therapy and certain medications.
Reglan is available in the form of a scored tablet to be taken by mouth, typically up to four times daily, 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime. Follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor carefully and not take Reglan more frequently, in larger doses, or for longer than directed, due to the risk of tardive dyskinesia. In some cases, your doctor may instruct you to take a single dose of Reglan before specific times when heartburn occurs, instead of taking it throughout the day, to minimize the risk of side effects.
Reglan can be taken continuously or intermittently for Gastroesophageal Reflux.
Reglan (Metoclopramide) is available in the following forms and strength:
Take Metoclopramide on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime. If you are using the disintegrating tablet, make sure your hands are dry before you handle it.
The onset of action for Reglan/metoclopramide can vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Consult with your doctor for specific information.
Reglan/metoclopramide may be used during pregnancy if its benefits outweigh the risks. However, consult with their doctor before taking Reglan/metoclopramide.
Reglan is usually taken 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime, or only with meals that usually cause heartburn.
