Prilosec, also known by its generic name omeprazole, is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid. It belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors that work by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Prilosec is also used to treat peptic ulcer disease, heartburn, dyspepsia, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Prilosec is often prescribed to those who experience frequent indigestion, dyspepsia, or other symptoms caused by excessive gastric acid production. Omeprazole is taken orally and works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Prilosec comes in the form of Capsule to be taken orally as directed, typically once daily before a meal. Patients should not increase their dose or take this medication more frequently than instructed. Prilosec Capsule should not be crushed, broken, or chewed, as this could result in the sudden release of all the drug, potentially increasing the risk of side effects.

The dosage and duration of treatment should be determined by the patient’s medical condition, response to treatment, age, and the body weight. For children, the dosage should be based on their weight.

  • Omeprazole can increase your risk for fundic gland polyps, especially if you have been taking the medicine for more than one year. If you are concerned about this risk, you should talk to your doctor.
  • People with pre-existing liver problems should consult their doctor before taking Prilosec, as the medicine can affect how the liver functions. Your doctor may opt for a lower dose or recommend alternative medications.
  • Several studies have shown that women who took Prilosec during pregnancy had a greater chance of having a child with asthma. This risk increases when other PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) are taken during pregnancy as well. It is important to consult with a doctor before taking any medication during pregnancy.
  • If you have any Asian relatives, such as Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Taiwanese, it is important to tell your doctor. You may need a lower dose of Omeprazole medicine to treat erosive esophagitis effectively.
  • You should use Omeprazole if you are also taking medications that contain rilpivirine, such as Edurant or Complera. Taking both medicines together can cause unwanted side effects. If you are taking any of these medications, talk to your doctor before taking Omeprazole.
  • Should not discontinue the use of Prilosec without first consulting your doctor. Abruptly stopping Prilosec can lead to other medical issues, so it is important to create a plan with your doctor to gradually reduce your dosage over the course of several weeks. This will help to minimize the risk of any potential side effects or medical complications.
