Pennsaid (active ingredient: diclofenac sodium) is a prescription medication indicated for:

  • Osteoarthritis of the Knee: Pennsaid is used topically to relieve pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis of the knee in adults.

Pennsaid belongs to a class of drugs known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which work by reducing substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation.

Pennsaid comes in the form of a solution to be applied to the affected joint(s) twice a day, in the morning and evening. It should be spread evenly over the entire joint, and the hands should be washed immediately after applying. Do not shower, bathe, or swim for at least 30 minutes after applying Pennsaid.

The recommended dose of Pennsaid solution depends on the condition being treated. For the relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee(s), the recommended dose is 40 drops per knee, four times per day. This amounts to a total daily dose of 160 drops, or approximately 8 mL.

  • Taking Pennsaid for a prolonged duration or in high doses, as well as having a pre-existing heart condition, can heighten the likelihood of experiencing a lethal heart attack or stroke.
  • While using Pennsaid, particularly among elderly patients, there is a possibility of experiencing stomach or intestinal bleeding without warning, which can be lethal.
  • Avoid using Pennsaid either before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft or CABG) due to the potential risks associated with the medication.
  • Pennsaid should not be used by individuals who are allergic to diclofenac (known by various brand names such as Voltaren, Cataflam, and Flector), as using the medication in such cases can cause adverse reactions.
  • Do not use Pennsaid during pregnancy unless a doctor specifically advises its use. Using an NSAID, such as Pennsaid, during the last 20 weeks of pregnancy can increase the likelihood of developing serious heart or kidney problems in the unborn baby and lead to complications with the pregnancy.
