Lotensin (active ingredient: benazepril) is a prescription medication indicated for the following:

  1. Hypertension: Lotensin is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults and children 6 years of age and older.
  2. Chronic Heart Failure: It is indicated for the treatment of chronic heart failure, in addition to other therapies, to improve survival and decrease the need for hospitalization for heart failure.

Lotensin belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, which work by relaxing blood vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow.

Benazepril tablets should be taken orally, once, or twice per day, with or without food. To ensure you do not miss a dose, take it at the same time(s) each day. Always follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain anything you do not understand.

Do not take more or less than prescribed, and do not take it more often than your doctor recommends. Your doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it. While benazepril helps control high blood pressure, it does not cure it, and you should continue to take it even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Benazepril without first consulting with your doctor.

  • Typical dosing for benazepril (Lotensin) in adults involves a starting dose of 10 mg to be taken orally once daily. The recommended maintenance dose ranges between 20 mg and 40 mg to be taken orally once daily or split into two doses and taken twice daily. If you are also taking a water pill, the typical starting dose is 5 mg to be taken orally once daily.
  • For children aged 6 years and older, the dose is calculated based on their weight, with a typical starting dose of 0.2 mg/kg taken orally once daily. The provider may increase the dose slowly over time if needed, up to a maximum of 0.6 mg/kg once daily.

  • Lotensin can cause kidney problems, especially if you already have kidney disease. Your doctor may need to monitor your kidney function regularly while you are taking Lotensin.
  • Lotensin can cause liver problems, so let your doctor know if you have any history of liver disease.
  • Lotensin can interact with other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Let your doctor know about all medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

How long does benazepril (Lotensin) last?

The effects of a dose of benazepril (Lotensin) typically last a little less than a day (about 19 hours). Depending on how your body responds to benazepril (Lotensin) and how your blood pressure differs throughout the day, your provider might ask you to take this medication once or twice a day.

Can Lotensin be taken with other medications?

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you are taking, as they can interact with Lotensin.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Lotensin?

If you miss a dose of Lotensin, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

What should I do if I experience side effects while taking Lotensin?

If you experience any side effects while taking Lotensin, talk with your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.
