Keflex (Cephalexin) is an antibiotic used to treat certain types of infections caused by bacteria. Cephalexin belongs to in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics and it works by fighting bacteria in the body. It is used to treat infections such as ear infections, upper respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, and skin infections.

Cefalexin, also spelled cephalexin, is an antibiotic that can treat a number of bacterial infections. It kills gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria by disrupting the growth of the bacterial cell wall. It can also be used to prevent infection after surgery.

Cefalexin is a beta-lactam antibiotic within the class of first-generation cephalosporins. It works similarly to other agents within this class, including intravenous cefazolin, but can be taken by mouth. Cefalexin can treat certain bacterial infections, including those of the middle ear, bone, joint, skin, and urinary tract. It may also be used for certain types of pneumonia and strep throat and to prevent bacterial endocarditis.

Cephalexin is available in two different dosage forms: capsules and tablets. These tablets and capsules should be taken with a full glass of water. Swallow the capsules whole and do not crush, chew, or break them. The usual dose of Keflex is 250 mg every 6 hours, or 500 mg every 12 hours, depending on the severity of the infection. Depending on the severity of the infection, the doctor may adjust the dosage.

It is important to use cephalexin for the full length of the prescribed course, even if symptoms appear to improve quickly. Omitting doses can increase the risk of infection that is resistant to medication. This medication will not be effective in treating viral infections, such as the flu or a common cold.
