Glucovance (active ingredients: glyburide and metformin) is a prescription medication indicated for:

  1. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Glucovance is used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise, and monotherapy with either glyburide or metformin do not result in adequate glycemic control.

Glucovance belongs to a class of drugs known as antidiabetic combinations, which combine a sulfonylurea (glyburide) that stimulates the pancreas to release insulin and a biguanide (metformin) that decreases glucose production by the liver and improves insulin sensitivity in the body’s tissues.

Glucovance is an oral tablet medication that is taken with meals as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If you are taking colesevelam, take the Glucovance tablet at least 4 hours before taking colesevelam.

The dosage of Glucovance is based on your medical condition and how well you respond to treatment. Your doctor may start you with a low dose and gradually increase it to reduce the risk of side effects, such as upset stomach and low blood sugar. Your doctor will monitor your blood sugar levels and adjust your dose accordingly.

To ensure that you get the maximum benefit from Glucovance, take it regularly and at the same time(s) each day. It may take up to 2 weeks before you experience the full benefits of the tablet. If your condition does not improve or worsens, such as having an abnormally high or low blood sugar, notify your doctor.
