Emend (active ingredient: aprepitant) is a prescription medication indicated for the following:

  1. Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV): Emend is used for the prevention of acute and delayed nausea and vomiting associated with highly emetogenic cancer chemotherapy (HEC) and moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy (MEC) in adults and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older.
  2. Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV): It is also indicated for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in adults.

Emend belongs to a class of drugs known as neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonists, which work by blocking the action of substance P, a neurotransmitter involved in the vomiting reflex, thereby preventing nausea and vomiting.

Take Emend (Aprepitant) capsules by mouth with or without food, as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the capsules whole. Take the first dose as directed by your doctor, usually 1 hour before the start of chemotherapy. For the next 2 days, take a dose once a day 1 hour before the start of chemotherapy if you are receiving it that day. If you are not receiving chemotherapy, take the dose once daily in the morning.

The dosage of medication may vary depending on the individual’s medical condition, age, and response to treatment. In children, the dosage may also be based on their weight. Your doctor will determine the best dosage for you or your child depending on these factors.

  • For adults and children aged 12 and older, the typical starting dose of Emend is 125 mg by mouth given 1 hour before chemotherapy on day 1, followed by 80 mg on day 2 and day 3.
  • For children aged 6 months to 11 years old, the dose is based on the child’s weight. The typical starting dose is 3 mg/kg by mouth given 1 hour before chemotherapy on day 1, followed by 2 mg/kg on day 2 and day 3.
