Eldepryl (active ingredient: selegiline) is a prescription medication indicated for:

  • Parkinson’s Disease: Eldepryl is used as an adjunct to levodopa/carbidopa in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease to help improve motor symptoms and enhance overall control of the disease.

Eldepryl belongs to a class of drugs known as monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitors, which work by inhibiting the breakdown of dopamine in the brain, thus enhancing dopaminergic activity and alleviating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Selegiline, also known as Eldepryl, is usually taken orally twice daily with breakfast and lunch. Taking selegiline late in the day may interfere with sleep. Take the dosage as directed by your doctor based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not increase the dosage or take it more often than prescribed.

After taking selegiline for two to three days, your doctor may instruct you to lower your levodopa dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions closely and do not stop or change the dose of any medication without consulting your doctor.

It may take several weeks before the full benefit of the medication is observed. Do not stop taking the drug without first consulting with your doctor. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed as this can cause a sudden and dangerous increase in blood pressure. If the medication ceases to work effectively or if your condition worsens, speak with your doctor.
