Bumex (Bumetanide) is a medication indicated to treat high blood pressure and edema, or excessive fluid retention. It belongs to a class of drugs known as diuretics. Bumetanide helps the body remove excess salt and water from the body by acting on the kidneys. By decreasing the amount of fluid in the body, Bumex can help reduce swelling and improve symptoms associated with heart failure and other medical conditions.
Bumex tablets are indicated for the treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, and hepatic and renal disease, including the nephrotic syndrome. It is used to reduce fluid retention and swelling caused by these conditions. Bumex tablets may also be used to treat high blood pressure, primary hyperaldosteronism, and other related conditions.
Bumex (Bumetanide) comes in the form of a tablet usually taken by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice a day. It can be taken with food or without food. Take Bumex at the same time(s) of the day and avoid taking it within 4 hours of bedtime to prevent having to get up to urinate.
The usual and recommended dose of bumetanide (Bumex) is 0.5 mg to 2 mg taken orally once a day, and sometimes twice a day. Your healthcare provider may adjust your dose as needed to keep your swelling at a manageable level. You should not take a total of more than 10 mg of bumetanide in a single day.
Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and do not increase your dose to more than what has been prescribed. Additionally, you should not take more than two doses of bumetanide in a single day and should not take the drug for longer than your healthcare provider recommends.
Bumex and its generic alternative Bumetanide are available in the following forms and strengths:
If you are taking a diuretic such as bumetanide, it is important not to have too much salt in your food because this can stop it from working as well as it should. Do not eat foods that have a lot of salt in them, such as processed foods or ready meals.
Bumex (Bumetanide) is usually taken as a tablet once or twice a day, and your healthcare provider may adjust the dose as needed to keep your swelling under control.
Bumetanide works very quickly, but its effects do not last long. Bumetanide starts to work within 30–60 minutes of when you take it. It usually stops working after 4–6 hours, especially if you are taking doses equal to or greater than 2 mg.
Bumex (Bumetanide) is not recommended for people with severe kidney disease, an allergy to sulfa drugs, or a history of gout. Additionally, Bumex (Bumetanide) should not be taken by pregnant women or people with uncontrolled high blood pressure.
