Boniva (Ibandronate sodium) is a medication indicated for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis; a condition characterized by weakened bones. Boniva contains the active drug ibandronate and belongs to a group of drugs called bisphosphonates. It works by slowing down the process of bone breakdown, helping to keep existing bone strong, and encouraging the body to form new bone.
Patients should take Boniva in the form of tablets once a month. For optimal results, it is recommended that the tablet be taken first thing in the morning, before consuming any food, drink, or other medications. Ensure that the tablet is swallowed with plain water only and not crushed or chewed. After taking Ibandronate Sodium, patients should wait at least one hour before eating, drinking, lying down, or taking other medications.
Boniva tablets are available in one strength of 150 milligrams (mg) and are to be swallowed whole. When taken as recommended, Boniva tablets should be taken once per month for optimal results in treating and preventing osteoporosis. The tablet form of Boniva is an oral medication and should not be chewed or crushed.
Boniva and its generic alternative Ibandronate sodium are available in the following forms and strengths.
Take ibandronate with a full glass (6 to 8 ounces) of plain water on an empty stomach. It should be taken first thing in the morning at least 60 minutes before any food, beverage, or other medicines.
For long-term osteoporosis treatment, Boniva may be prescribed. However, if your doctor determines that your risk of bone fracture is low, they may suggest ceasing Boniva usage after 3 to 5 years. This is because the safety and effectiveness of Boniva when taken for more than 3 years is not yet known.
BONIVA should be taken on an empty stomach to be effective. Take one tablet after waking up in the morning, before consuming any food, drink, or other medications. Ensure that you are sitting or standing when taking BONIVA.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has issued guidance, saying that although the optimal duration is not known, discontinuation should be considered after three to five years for patients with a low fracture risk.
