Biaxin XL (active ingredient: clarithromycin) is a prescription medication indicated for the following:

  1. Bacterial Infections: Biaxin XL is used to treat various bacterial infections, including those of the respiratory tract (such as pneumonia and bronchitis), skin and soft tissue infections, and sinus infections.
  2. Helicobacter pylori Eradication: It is also indicated as part of a combination therapy to eradicate Helicobacter pylori in patients with peptic ulcer disease.

Biaxin XL belongs to a class of drugs known as macrolide antibiotics, which work by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis to help treat and prevent bacterial infections.

Biaxin XL (Clarithromycin) is an oral tablet that is taken with food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Swallow the tablets whole and not crush or chew them, as doing so can release all the drug at once and increase the risk of side effects. To ensure the best results, take the tablet at evenly spaced times, and try to take it at the same time every day.

The recommended dosage of Biaxin XL (Clarithromycin) depends on the severity of the medical condition being treated and the patient’s response to the treatment. For the treatment of mild to moderate bacterial infections, the recommended dosages of Biaxin XL Filmtab range from 500 mg once daily to 1000 mg once daily. The length of treatment may vary from a few days to several weeks, depending on the specific condition being treated.

Continue taking Biaxin XL until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if your symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in a recurrence of the infection.
