Mirtazapine is an antidepressant, used for the treatment of major depressive disorder. It works by directly affecting the chemicals in the brain that become unbalanced and cause depression.
This medicine may cause dizziness and drowsiness; use caution driving or operating machinery. Avoid alcohol while using Mirtazapine. Caution is advised when using this medicine in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. Children, teenagers, and young adults who take Mirtazapine may be at increased risk for suicidal thoughts or actions. Watch all patients who take Mirtazapine closely.
Inform your doctor if you
- have liver or kidney disease;
- have bipolar disorder (manic depression);
- have seizures or epilepsy;
- have heart disease, including angina (chest pain);
- have a history of heart attack or stroke; or
- have a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts;
- are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Mirtazapine Side Effects
Most Severe: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); decreased ability to fight infection (fever, chills, sore throat); mental or mood changes; mouth sores; thoughts of hurting yourself; tremors; worsening of depression.
Most Common: Abnormal dreams, abnormal thinking, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, increased appetite, weight gain, persistent sore throat or fever, chills, trouble breathing, chest pain.
