Glyburide is used to control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes who cannot manage blood sugar levels by diet and exercise alone. It controls diabetes by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin, which helps to lower blood sugar.
Before using Glyburide, tell your doctor about any of the following: if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding; if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine; if you have any other medical conditions; if you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine; if you have elevated keystone levels or type 1 diabetes.
Important Information on Glyburide
- Glyburide may increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
- It is recommended that patients carry a piece of hard candy or glucose tablets to treat episodes of low blood sugar.
- Glyburide is not an oral form of insulin, and cannot be used in place of insulin.
- Follow diet, medication, and exercise routines closely. Changing any of them can affect blood sugar levels.
- Avoid alcohol as it lowers blood sugar and may interfere with diabetes treatment.
Before taking Glyburide, tell your doctor if you
- have kidney disease;
- have liver disease;
- have thyroid disease;
- have type 1 diabetes;
- have a serious infection, illness, or injury; or
- need surgery.
