Pentasa (active ingredient: mesalamine) is a prescription medication indicated for:

  • Ulcerative Colitis: Pentasa is used for the induction and maintenance of remission in patients with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis.

Pentasa belongs to a class of drugs known as aminosalicylates, which work by reducing inflammation in the colon to manage symptoms of ulcerative colitis.

Pentasa comes in the form of Prolonged Release Tablet to take by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually 4 times daily.  Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it as this can prevent the drug from being released properly into the colon. In case of difficulty swallowing the Tablets, the contents can be opened and sprinkled on applesauce or yogurt, but the drug/food mixture should be swallowed whole without chewing, and not prepared in advance.

Drink plenty of fluids during treatment with Pentasa, unless otherwise directed by your doctor, to help prevent kidney stones. Your dosage is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment. Use Pentasa regularly to get the most benefit from it and take it at the same time each day to help remember. If your condition does not improve or worsens, inform your doctor.
