Cilazapril (Inhibace) is an ACE inhibitor used for the treatment of high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It controls blood pressure and reduces symptoms of congestive heart failure by relaxing blood vessels and by making the heart pump more efficiently.
For treatment of blood pressure, Inhibace may be used alone or in combination with diuretics known as thiazide diuretics (e.g., Hydrochlorothiazide) when one medication has not been found to control blood pressure satisfactorily. For treatment of congestive heart failure, it is used in addition to Digoxin or thiazide diuretics or both.
What is high blood pressure?
When you have high blood pressure, or hypertension, the force of blood against your artery walls is too strong. High blood pressure can damage your arteries, heart, and kidneys, and lead to atherosclerosis and stroke. Hypertension is called a “silent killer” because it does not cause symptoms unless it is severely high and, without your knowing it, causes major organ damage if not treated.
What is congestive heart failure?
The development of heart failure usually means that your heart’s ability to pump blood has weakened, so it can’t circulate enough blood to meet your body’s needs. Shortness of breath, fatigue and leg swelling may result. When fluid builds up, heart failure is called congestive. Sometimes the heart becomes too stiff to fill properly, and that also can lead to heart failure.
How is Inhibace taken?
Recommended doses range from 0.5 mg to 10 mg once daily, depending on the condition being treated as well as the person’s liver and kidney function. Inhibace should be taken at the same time each day.
Who shouldn’t take Inhibace?
You should not use this medication if you:
- have an allergy to Cilazapril or any ingredients in it
- have a history of angioedema (a serious allergic reaction which causes the area around the throat and tongue to swell) after taking any ACE inhibitors (e.g., Captopril, Enalapril, Fosinopril, Lisinopril, and others)
- have ascites (swollen abdomen due to liver problems)
- are pregnant
Does Inhibace have any side effects?
While taking this medication you may or may not experience these side effects:
- dry cough
- headache
- diarrhea
- loss of taste
- nausea
- unusual tiredness
Although rare you should seek medical help immediately if you experience any of the symptoms listed below:
- sudden difficulty swallowing or breathing
- fever and chills
- hoarseness
- swelling of face, mouth, hands, or feet (signs of angioedema)
- stomach pain, itching of skin, or yellow eyes or skin
