Topicort Gel (active ingredient: desoximetasone) is a prescription medication indicated for the following:

  1. Inflammatory Skin Conditions: Topicort Gel is used to treat various inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, providing relief from symptoms like itching, redness, and swelling.
  2. Dermatitis: It is indicated to manage dermatitis, including allergic and contact dermatitis, by reducing inflammation and relieving associated discomfort.

Topicort Gel belongs to a class of drugs known as topical corticosteroids, which work by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response in affected areas of the skin.

Topicort Gel is applied directly to the affected area(s) of the skin, usually once or twice daily, or as directed by your healthcare provider.

To use Topicort Gel, follow these steps:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before using the medication.
  2. Apply a thin layer of the gel to the affected area of skin.
  3. Rub the gel gently into the skin until it is completely absorbed.
  4. Do not cover the area with a bandage or other dressing unless directed to do so by your healthcare provider.
  5. Use Topicort Gel as directed by your healthcare provider. It is usually applied once or twice a day.

Please note that Topicort Gel is for topical use only and should not be used on the face or in other sensitive areas unless directed to do so by your healthcare provider. Avoid getting the gel in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If the gel gets into your eyes, rinse them thoroughly with water. Do not use it on open wounds or infected skin. If you experience any side effects or have any concerns about using the gel, consult with your healthcare provider.

  • Topicort Gel should be used with caution in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.
  • Topical corticosteroids, including Topicort Gel, should be used cautiously in patients with a history of corticosteroid-induced dermatitis.
  • Prolonged use of Topicort Gel may cause skin atrophy, which can present as thinning of the skin, striae, telangiectasia, and increased vulnerability to infection.
  • Topically applied corticosteroids can be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects, and therefore Topicort Gel should be used with caution in patients with known or suspected adrenal insufficiency since it may lead to adrenal suppression.
  • Patients using Topicort Gel should avoid using it on their face, groin, or armpit unless directed by their physician, and avoid prolonged use on large areas of the body.
  • The use of Topicort Gel during pregnancy and lactation should be avoided unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
  • Topicort Gel should not be used to treat any viral or fungal infections of the skin, such as herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus, or tinea (ringworm) infections, as it may worsen the condition.

How long does it take for Topicort Gel to work?

The amount of time it takes for Topicort Gel to work varies depending on the condition being treated and the severity of the symptoms. Some people may start to see improvement within a few days, while others may take a few weeks to notice a difference.

Can I use Topicort Gel on my face?

Topicort Gel should not be used on the face unless directed to do so by your healthcare provider. The skin on the face is thinner and more sensitive than other parts of the body, and long-term use of topical corticosteroids on the face can cause skin thinning and increased risk of infection.

Can I use Topicort Gel with other medications?

Before using Topicort Gel with other medications, consult with your healthcare provider. Some medications may interact with topical corticosteroids, and your doctor may need to adjust the dosages or monitor you more closely.

How long can I use Topicort Gel for?

Topicort Gel should not be used for more than two weeks unless directed to do so by your healthcare provider. Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids can cause skin thinning, stretch marks, and other side effects.

Is Topicort Gel safe for children?

Topicort Gel can be used on children as young as three months old but should be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider. Children are more likely to experience side effects from topical corticosteroids, use only as directed.
