Tofranil (active ingredient: imipramine) is a prescription medication indicated for the following:

  1. Depression: Tofranil is used for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults and children.
  2. Nocturnal Enuresis: It is also indicated for the management of bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in children over the age of 6.

Tofranil belongs to a class of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), which work by affecting the balance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin and norepinephrine, thereby improving mood and reducing bedwetting episodes in children.

Tofranil (Imipramine) tablets are usually taken by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually 1 to 4 times daily. If you experience daytime drowsiness, your doctor may advise you to take the entire dose once daily at bedtime.

The dose you need will depend on your medical condition and response to therapy. If you are a child, the dosage may be based on your body weight. To minimize your risk of side effects, your doctor may start you at a low dose and then gradually increase your dose.

If you are using imipramine to manage bed-wetting in children, it should be taken one hour before bedtime. In case your child typically wets the bed early in the night, the drug can be given earlier in separate doses. For example, the drug may be given in one dose in the afternoon and another one at bedtime.

If you are taking imipramine for depression, you should be aware that it does not start working immediately. It may take up to 3 weeks before you experience the full benefits of the medication. Continue taking the medication even if you start feeling better. Do not stop taking the tablet suddenly without first consulting your doctor. Suddenly stopping medication may worsen some conditions. Your doctor may need to decrease your dose gradually.
