Symmetrel (active ingredient: amantadine) is a prescription medication indicated for the following:

  1. Influenza Prevention and Treatment: Symmetrel is used for the prevention and treatment of influenza A virus infection in adults and children.
  2. Parkinson’s Disease: It is also indicated for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and for drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms.

Symmetrel belongs to a class of drugs known as antiviral agents and dopaminergic agents, which work by inhibiting viral replication and enhancing dopaminergic activity in the brain, respectively.

Symmetrel capsules should be taken orally with or without food, as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily. If you have trouble sleeping after taking Symmetrel capsules twice daily, take the second dose several hours before bedtime. Dosage of Symmetrel is based on your medical condition and response to therapy, and in children, it is based on body weight. Be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions, and do not take more than prescribed.

To ensure the medication is effective, maintain a constant level of Symmetrel in your body. Take the capsules at even intervals throughout the day and night. If taking Symmetrel for a viral infection, begin taking it as soon as possible and continue for the full prescribed amount, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in relapse of the infection.

With Parkinson’s disease, Symmetrel may take several weeks to show effects. Do not stop taking the medication suddenly, as this may worsen your symptoms or side effects. Your doctor may gradually reduce your dose instead. After several months of use, the capsules may not work as well. Be sure to inform your doctor if this happens.
