Okacin is an antibiotic used to treat eye infections. It is commonly used for the diagnosis or treatment of bacterial infection, bacterial growth, and burns.

Okacin contains lomefloxacin hydrochloride. It works by inhibiting two enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV that are required for bacterial growth and reproduction. By inhibiting these enzymes, lomefloxacin hydrochloride interferes with bacterial DNA replication, preventing bacteria from multiplying and allowing the body’s immune system to clear the infection.

Okacin used as eye drops applied topically. Based on the information found across multiple sources, here are the instructions for using Okacin drops:

  1. Wash your hands before using Okacin eye drops.
  2. Gently pull down the lower lid of your eye to form a “pouch”.
  3. Tilt your head back and look upward.
  4. Hold the bottle upright and squeeze one or two drops into the lower eyelid pouch.
  5. Close your eyes and press your fingertip at the inner corner of the eye and roll the eyeball, which spreads the drops in the eye.
  6. Use Okacin eye drops as directed by your doctor, usually 2 to 4 times per day until symptoms improve.

After using the drops, wait at least five minutes before opening your eyes to allow the medication to absorb. Avoid touching the droplets with your fingers or allowing the tip of the bottle to touch your eye or surrounding areas.

Okacin: Drops

  • 3mg/mL

  • Hypersensitivity to the drug or fluoroquinolone class in general. People who have had allergic reactions to Okacin or other fluoroquinolones should not use it.
  • Avoid sunlight: you should avoid exposure to direct or indirect sunlight while using Okacin and for at least 2 days after discontinuing the drug.
  • Risk of prolonging the QT interval. Okacin can potentially prolong the QT interval and should be used with caution in patients with known QT prolongation or who are taking other drugs that also affect QT interval.
  • Possible phototoxic reactions. Okacin has been associated with a relatively high incidence of phototoxic reactions in patients, so exposure to sunlight or UV light should be minimized while taking this drug.
  • Use in children. Okacin has not been determined safe and effective for use in children below 12 years of age.
  • Fluoroquinolone-associated myasthenia gravis. Fluoroquinolones including Okacin have been associated with exacerbation or development of myasthenia gravis in some patients. Risk may be higher in the elderly.
  • Phototoxic reactions. Okacin is associated with a relatively high incidence of phototoxic reactions compared to other fluoroquinolones, especially with prolonged use. Minimize exposure to UV light and sunlight while using Okacin.
  • Neurological effects. Okacin like other fluoroquinolones may rarely cause neurological adverse effects like dizziness, tremors, depression, hallucinations, behavioral changes, and insomnia. Risk is higher with higher doses and longer duration of therapy.
  • Cataract surgery. Okacin should be discontinued at least one day prior to cataract surgery due to potential adverse events associated with exposure to fluoroquinolone antibiotics during implantation of intraocular lens.

How should Okacin eye drops be stored?

Okacin eye drops should be stored at room temperature between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Keep container tightly closed and protect from light. Do not freeze.

How often should Okacin eye drops be used?

Okacin eye drops should be applied 2–4 times daily until conjunctivitis is cured, usually for 5–7 days. The dosage should not exceed 6 times daily.

Okacin can interact with other medications that also prolong the QT interval like antiarrhythmics, macrolides, and some antipsychotics. Increased risk of toxicity.
