Nexgard (active ingredient: afoxolaner) is a prescription medication indicated for the following:

  • Flea and Tick Control: Nexgard is used for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis) and the treatment and control of tick infestations (Ixodes scapularis, Dermacentor variabilis, Dermacentor reticulatus, and Rhipicephalus sanguineus) in dogs.

Nexgard belongs to a class of drugs known as isoxazoline-substituted benzamide derivatives, which work by interfering with the nervous system of fleas and ticks, leading to their death.

NexGard is a chewable tablet available by prescription and designed to control flea and tick infestations in dogs. If a dose is suspected to have been lost, or if vomiting occurs within two hours of administration, the recommendation is to redose with another full dose. NexGard can be given with or without food, and it should be administered consistently throughout the year to help prevent infestations. Additionally, treat all the pets in your home to reduce the risk of a flea infestation.

The appropriate dosage of NexGard is based on your dog’s weight. The recommended dosage of NexGard is a minimum of 1.14 mg/lb. (2.5 mg/kg). Note that it is recommended to speak to a veterinarian before giving NexGard to your dog.
