Metrogel (active ingredient: metronidazole) is a prescription medication indicated for:

  • Rosacea: Metrogel is used topically to treat the inflammatory lesions (bumps and pimples) of mild to moderate rosacea.

Metrogel belongs to a class of drugs known as nitroimidazole antibiotics, which work by stopping the growth of bacteria and reducing inflammation.

MetroGel is applied to the affected areas of the skin once or twice per day, as directed by your doctor. To apply MetroGel (metronidazole) gel, follow these steps:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  2. Clean and dry the affected area of skin.
  3. Apply a thin layer of gel to the affected area, avoiding the eyes and the mouth. Rub in gently.
  4. Wash your hands again after applying the gel.
  5. If you are using the gel twice per day, apply it once in the morning and once in the evening, about 12 hours apart.
  6. Do not cover the affected area with a bandage or dressing, unless instructed to do so by your doctor.
  7. If you are applying to the vaginal area, use the applicator that comes with the medication and follow the instructions given by your healthcare provider.

Be sure to use the medication exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not use the medication or apply it more often than directed.

  • Metronidazole should be used with caution in patients with evidence of or history of blood dyscrasia.
  • Peripheral neuropathy, characterized by numbness or paresthesia of an extremity, has been reported in patients treated with oral or intravenous metronidazole.
  • Metronidazole is present in human milk at concentrations similar to maternal serum levels, and therefore its use should be avoided during lactation if possible.
  • Metronidazole should not be taken with alcohol or within three days after the last dose of metronidazole, as this may cause a disulfiram-like reaction
