Kytril (active ingredient: granisetron hcl) is a prescription medication indicated for the following:

  1. Prevention of Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV): Kytril is used for the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of emetogenic cancer chemotherapy, including high-dose cisplatin.
  2. Prevention of Radiation-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (RINV): It is indicated for the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with radiotherapy in patients receiving either total body irradiation, single high-dose fraction to the abdomen, or daily fractions to the abdomen.
  3. Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV): Kytril is also used for the prevention of nausea and vomiting following surgery.

Kytril belongs to a class of drugs known as selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonists, which work by blocking serotonin, a natural substance in the body that can trigger nausea and vomiting.

Kytril (Granisetron HCl) is available in tablet form to be taken orally. When taken to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, patients typically take Kytril one hour before the chemotherapy session starts. Patients should carefully follow the instructions on the prescription label and ask their healthcare provider or pharmacist to explain any parts they do not understand.

For preventing nausea and vomiting caused by radiation, Kytril is usually taken within one hour before treatment. Depending on the prescription strength, a second dose may be taken 12 hours after the initial dose. Take Kytril exactly as directed and do not take more or less than prescribed or take it more frequently than recommended by the doctor.
